As the New York theater industry awaits clarity on the future of the New York City Musical and Theatrical Production Tax Credit, newly released figures highlight its substantial impact on Broadway and Off-Broadway. Since its inception, 107 productions have received a combined $232 million from the program, according to the Empire State Development Fund (ESD), which administers the initiative. Additional productions have been pre-approved but have not yet filed for funds, or have filed and are awaiting final approval and distribution.

As of mid-July, ESD reported that approximately $365 million of the program’s $400 million total funding has already been allocated. With some applications still pending, the agency has announced it will no longer accept submissions for productions whose first paid performance falls after September 15, 2025.

The program’s first payouts were issued on August 4, 2022, to five productions. Since then, distributions have continued through May 2025. Of the 107 funded shows, 45 received the maximum $3 million award, while the smallest grant totaled $251,854. The current list of recipients suggests that no productions from the 2024–2025 season have yet received payment.

Whether the credit will be extended beyond its current funding remains uncertain. Negotiations for New York’s next state budget are scheduled to begin in January, with the budget typically signed into law in April or May.

The Broadway League has already launched its lobbying efforts ahead of the January talks, while the Off-Broadway League has announced plans to advocate for the program’s extension. Supporters argue that the credit has been essential to the post-pandemic recovery of New York theater, helping productions launch, recoup, and sustain thousands of jobs across the industry.

Below is the full list of productions and the amounts they have received to date.
