Broadway's Spring 2027 Could Be a Theater Traffic Jam

The 2026-2027 Broadway season could be one of the busiest in years and we’re still far from knowing what the final lineup will look like.

The season also has an unusual start. Paranormal Activity is scheduled to open on August 25, making it one of the latest starts to a Broadway season in recent memory. With no true summer plays or musicals opening, Broadway will have a quieter than usual summer before the pace begins to pick up in late August.

Between August 25, when Paranormal Activity officially opens, and the end of 2026, 11 productions are currently scheduled to open on Broadway. Add the still anticipated announcements for the soon-to-be-vacant Booth and Barrymore Theatres, along with the newly vacant Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and that number could rise to 14 openings before the calendar turns to 2027. That's also provided there are no surprise closings in the next few months! 14 openings before the end of the fiscal year is a fairly small number relative to most other seasons.

The momentum doesn't stop after New Year's. January is already taking shape on the nonprofit side, with Awake & Sing! at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and Mix & Master at the Todd Haimes Theatre.

Then the floodgates could open.

Already announced for March and April are:

• Evita – Winter Garden Theatre

• Gloria – Hayes Theatre

• The Sound of Music – Vivian Beaumont Theatre

• The Full Monty – Todd Haimes Theatre

• Warriors – Lunt-Fontanne Theatre

• Paddington: The Musical – Al Hirschfeld Theatre

• Montauk – Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

The spring slate features a remarkable mix of blockbuster musicals, acclaimed transfers, major revivals, and nonprofit productions. Among the highlights are Jamie Lloyd's Evita following its acclaimed London run, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Warriors, the Broadway revival of The Sound of Music, and the Broadway premiere of Paddington: The Musical.

The biggest question, however, isn't what is opening. It's what is closing.

Looking at the current landscape, as many as 12-15 musicals currently running COULD conclude their Broadway engagements by early 2027, potentially creating one of the largest theater reshuffles in recent memory and resulting in as many as 28 spring openings. Yes, 28! That kind of turnover would free up a significant number of Broadway houses just as producers prepare to launch their spring productions, and it would explain why several high profile projects have yet to announce complete schedules.

If most of these productions ultimately reach Broadway, the 2026-2027 season could surpass the 42 Tony Award eligible productions that made the 2024-2025 season one of the busiest on record.

If everything falls into place, Broadway could be headed for one of its deepest and most competitive seasons in decades. It would also make for an exceptionally busy year for Tony voters, who may once again find themselves evaluating one of the largest fields of eligible productions in recent Broadway history!
