As Labor Day fades into memory and summer officially winds down, the 2024-2025 Broadway season has ALMOST completely taken shape, bringing into focus the potential contenders for the upcoming Tony nominations. Last season delivered 36 new plays and musicals, and this year is off to a strong start with 33 new shows either announced, currently running, or concluded, including Home, which ended its limited run on July 21. Below is how things are looking for this season:

With productions like The Notebook already posting a closing date (December 15) and others announcing limited runs, we can expect an additional 5 to 8 productions to be announced for the spring. This could potentially bring the total number of new Broadway shows to an impressive 40 for the season!

One of the biggest questions this season revolves around the Tony Award categorization of Romeo + Juliet. With a new score by Jack Antonoff, there’s ongoing speculation about whether it will qualify as a Best Play contender or if it will adhere closely enough to the original Shakespearean script to compete in the Best Revival of a Play category. We’ll have a clearer answer in the coming weeks, as previews begin September 26!
