Appropriate became the first production since Venus In Fur (2011) to transfer commercially to a Broadway theater from a non-profit Broadway theater, not to be confused with an Off Broadway to Broadway transfer.
Let's examine the performance of its 2 different runs:
The Hayes Theater
(11/28/23 – 3/3/2024)
Previews – 23
Performances – 82
Total Gross – $9,191,220
Average Ticket Price (ATP) - $156.71
Average Capacity % - 96.31%
Belasco Theatre
(3/23/2024 – 6/30/2024)
Previews – 0
Performances – 112
Total Gross – $10,891,943
Average Ticket Price (ATP) - $123.06
Average Capacity % - 90.82%
Appropriate excelled in both theaters, each offering unique dynamics. The higher average ticket price (ATP) and capacity at The Hayes Theater reflected strong initial demand and premium pricing. In contrast, the extended run and higher total gross at Belasco Theatre, despite a lower ATP and capacity, indicated sustained interest and greater accessibility due to more affordable ticket prices. The commercial transfer from The Hayes Theater was evidently successful, achieving high audience engagement and solid financial performance in both venues. Winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play significantly boosted the final 2 weeks of box office grosses, with ATP exceeding $140 in both weeks for the first time in the commercial production's run.
